There are dozens TikToks of Chinese factory reps explaining to Americans how to get expensive “western” goods like Lululemon directly to dodge tariff markups Is it brilliant economic warfare or just a fascinating market evolution?

I wonder if the Chinese factories are assuming the trade war kills their brand relationships anyway so they might as well sell their inventory…

this has been a topic and sales technique for years, and they advertise this to chinese viewers as well (lululemon pants in any shanghai lululemon are the same price as in stores in the US) wouldn’t read too far into it, though some of the ones geared toward the US have hilarious digs in them now

ofc ofc but i think the shift around advertising directly to Americans IS a deliberate decision which makes it interesting to me

coming back to this my guy word from some friends in china is that the govt has “soft legalized” counterfeits since a few years back, and are now “encouraging” manufacturers to cut ties with western brands and to launch their own brands out of tik tok — so today i make a birkin bag, tomorrow i make the same item, different buckle and different brand name and sell d2c on tik tok, no tariff boom
