Same for me with Portuguese. Never lived in Brazil but If you speak slow and clear chances are I'll be able to understand a good portion of what you say. (But forget about Portuguese from Portugal lol)

Yes. I lived in Spain for 5 months when I was 20. I was fluent but I haven't practiced in so many years that I am rusty. I understand it but it is hard for me to talk.
