If you wanted to get really crazy you could do quadratic tipping

We've already talked about accumulating allowances over a 2-7 day window, so what if repeat tips to the same account within that time window were also applied quadratically, ie every unit tipped after the first unit eats 2n-1 marginal units of allowance

Totally agree, we'd have to noodle on a bot or action or something that lets you know what to expect on the final tip amount given your intent to spend

This seems like a great idea. It encourages distributing your tips widely by making clique tipping low value, and increases the work exponentially required for farming. One downside is it might be difficult for users to understand what their tip will be worth in points.

Degen farmers seem to be making a comeback. We did a little research on @razdva, which is currently ranked #2 in Airdrop Season 6, and found some very interesting results. w/ @rupee94 cc. @jacek @wake.eth

This is another kind of crazy one, and it actually makes tipping more PVP, but I'm nerdsniping myself about it because I think it actually might be like asking the community to solve non-computable NP problems (something something detecting cyclical graphs):

What if you could detect tipping rings and divert the tips to someone else by identifying the members of the ring? We could call it RECYCLE because you're breaking the cycle 😎

We could then create a leaderboard of people whose tips have been recycled.

Eg
RECYCLE 200 DEGEN @jacek > @wake.eth > @cadillion => @0xen 
would steal 200 DEGEN from the jacek-wake-cadillion ring and gift it to 0xen

Lol, that is the drawback. All you would really need to know is that tipping the same person gets more expensive the more you tip them.

Hard part would be showing the final tip amount, given that our interface is limited to cast comments rn

Totally agree, and defining harmful tipping is always going to be a gray area. Of course we want projects like /degenpad to succeed and think they're providing a valuable service.

Imo, the purpose of DEGEN should be to surface high quality content and dapps while rewarding their creators

If you created a feed and sorted by most-tipped, that should be a list of absolutely goated casters, devs, dapps, and artists. If it's just a feed of people who tip other people, then I think we've failed. 

/tip4tip has a place in creating community and fun roleplay, but I don't think it's unreasonable to give better perks to people who want to do the actual work of curation

I believe that the first thing that needs to be addressed in the community is defining what constitutes "harmful" tipping. Simply tipping repeatedly to the same account is not enough. Cherry pickers will only increase, and innocent victims will emerge. /degenpad collects 1M+ $DEGEN each season for community projects. If the current definition is accepted, the participants of these projects may suffer.

If people can just VOO and chill then DEGEN adds no value

VOO is a collection of the most productive companies in the world, transforming raw metals & hydrocarbons & quartz into computers & airplanes & decentralized currency networks, which is why you can VOO & chill.

They need your money for R&D, you want their profits & products.

DEGEN needs to provide some value to people, and community members have been reasonably upset about the farming activity because it degrades the experience for all farcaster users, clogging the feed with tipping ring spam without creating an accompanying benefit like valuable curation.

We don't claim to have it perfect, but I don't think the answer is to throw our hands up and lose the protocol to empty farming spam

It sounds more and more like the "VOO and chill" approach of Moxie is probably the most sustainable solution to these issues.

Too complicated, keep it simple or people will get bored..

Just thinking out loud about different ways to reward good content:

A) Users tip via replies: The current way degen tipping works.

B) Users don't tip, but the system determines the quality of a post based on engagement from other users (likes, recasts, quote casts).

C) Using AI to decide the quality of a cast. The simplest way would be to  send the cast content to ChatGPT API and ask it to rate it between 1-10 based on quality.

D) A combination of the previous three?

Just some thoughts, not sure if this answers the dilemma you have, but maybe it sparks an idea.
