why is it so popular?

2019 was a huge year for superheroes.

The Avengers had just wrapped up with End Game.

I think people liked it because it depicted people and superheroes in their own accurate self-interested light.

Tl;dr - By 2019, people were sick of everyone acting like they were always good.  The Boys finally put it on screen.
