Trying to explain to a monk in a 1,000 year old temple that you don’t actually love Wendy’s but you love memes and forgot you were wearing these hilarious socks.

So my silly socks led me to enjoying a cup of tea with a monk who studied English for a year in Indiana when he was in high school and I didn’t realize how special this moment really was. The tea is very rare. It’s from the oldest tea garden in all of Japan. Zen Master Eisai brought back from the Song Dynasty and when he planted it in the mountains, it was said that he recommended it to the monks because it “had the effect of waking up sleep that interfered with training”. Guess they discovered caffeine ;)


I’m still in awe that my silly socks and me explaining the Wendy’s meme to a monk led to this moment.

Reminded of my serendipitous 2 weeks stay at a Thai temple in the early 2000s, I was just walking past a temple early morning on the historic side of chao phraya and a monk waved at him, he served me some ginseng tea , show me some pics (turns out he was the abott), and next thing I was there for 2 weeks lolol. I couldn't even speak Thai and he couldn't speak English so these are fun stuff, money cant buy

It was a beautiful day and this was the cherry on top. I went for the art, stayed for the /momiji and got to have tea with a monk!
