It's soil testing season, if you didn't pull samples in the fall, now is a great time to get analysis ahead of the spring. We collected ours yesterday and posted them in the mail today; sending samples to both Logan Labs (https://www.loganlabs.com/) and our local soil lab at UMass Amherst. Thoughts on testing below.

That’s smart to submit to multiple places to get them to check the work. Do you calculate your own mineral application rates or work with someone for mineral recommendations? It’s cool you have years of tests have you increased your OM?

I do all my own fertility recommendations as I've been working with these labs since 2008 and also spent many years working as a consulant. The logan labs test is a mehlich 3 analysis which gives wildly high P numbers so we also use UMass (modified morgan) to get a better sense of available P. State labs have algos.

private labs have consultants, both can be useful. we haven't really been focusing on OM, ours have built a bit over the years, but not heaps, as we don't add tons of residue or compost.

That’s cool - where are the state lab algorithms hosted? I’ve never seen those. I have much less experience I just started establishing permanent raised beds last season. What do you use for inputs?

each lab has their own reccs based on crops you are growing. they'll send along reccs for 3 or 4 crops when you give them tests. permanent raised beds are great if you have time to manage the pathways, etc. can really get the biology kicking in them which can grow some beautiful crops. too many inputs to list >

on the east coast > fertrell, seven springs are good distributors here in Mass we use progressive grower which serves New England. South, Midwest, and West there are other options. Amazon actually is decent. Ditto Peaceful Valley for amendments. shipping can be rough for small growers.
