one of my close friends talked about her bodily autonomy being the main reason she could never consider voting for trump (aka right to abortions) i believe trumps official positioning there is letting states decide but would love to know more about that under him vs biden

“letting states decide” is a pretty perfect way for him to not commit to either side. i’m pretty sure he actually supports abortion rights but knows he can’t be pro choice for conservatives. on the other hand, republicans have been losing elections from abortion since roe v. wade was reversed so he doesn’t want to be openly against it either. biden wants roe v wade to go back in place, i.e. federal government protects the right to abortions

Also, abortion is only one aspect of reproductive health that is being attacked. Planned parenthood is one of the main ways low income, underinsured women get their yearly exams (including breast cancer screening). Women need access and they need to make decisions based on science not religion.

Trump brags about his choosing the Justices that overturned Roe. “Leaving it to the states” is just a way of avoiding more blatant rhetoric around abortion. Project 2025 has a much clearer pathway to ending all access for women and despite trump’s recent distancing from the project verbally there is plenty of evidence that he plans on using the project 2025 as his guide.

Yes, that seems to be how Trump is representing his personal position at this point. He of course explicitly ran on getting pro life judges appointed back in 2016… one of the few things he followed through on. Now he knows the abortion issue is electorally toxic and he’s started spouting the position on State’s Rights. He is now at odds with many social conservatives including the Evangelicals who were so important in 2016 and who want a federal ban on abortion. Biden has bluntly articulated a reinstatement of RvW which has been interpreted as a federal protection of abortion rights. Obviously the number of weeks and other variables like health of the mother/child etc factor in. As a related aside… Trump’s representation of this in the debate was ludicrous where he was suggesting Democrats want to abort babies “even after birth”. Anyone who knows anything about this knows late term abortions are incredibly rare and are a result of some sort of health emergency.
