A comparable movie today would be based in 2007

The reason that 1976 seems much more distant from 1993 than 2007 does from 2024 is that the internet has trapped us in a cultural forever-present, unable to move into the future because the things of the past never fade from sight. 

We inhabit a static, stuck, ersatz culture.

Centralized tastemakers in hollywood (studios, agents, production co's) have become incredibly risk averse operators. 

The startup analogy is- the entertainment market is now filled only with late stage equity investors. Early stage angel investors (w/ more appetite for risk) don't have access to the market. 

Thus, production and marketing budgets go to established IP/talent vs. new voices/faces/narratives. Hollywood has forgotten how to grow movie stars.
