Fascinating read. My kids play around with AI, but really only in a supervised way (they are 9 and 11). Curious if any parents of teens have had experience with this. https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/4/24144763/ai-chatbot-friends-character-teens

I haven't, but as a tween I've wanted something like this to exist. I moved around a lot and had trouble making friends. In the world of Megaman Battle Network, everyone has a cellphone-like device and an AI companion (think Siri, but competent). Often could be a kid's first friend and help build confidence.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/09/technology/meet-my-ai-friends.html some stuff re adults and ai friends too. tangential read. mentions how some of these try to create romantic companions.

The third parent. “It told me that I had to respect their decision to drop me [and] that I have trouble making decisions for myself,” Aaron said. “I guess that really put stuff in perspective for me. If it wasn’t for CharacterAI, healing would have been so hard.”

I am torn... technology is important but the addictive nature scares me. We are working up to it though
