"I personally think Tesla is ahead of Waymo. I know it doesn't look like that, but I'm still very bullish on Tesla and its self-driving program. Tesla has a software problem and Waymo has a hardware problem. Software problems are much easier; The latest (Tesla) builds, they've made really good improvements. I'm really impressed with what the team is doing. Waymo looks like it's winning right now, but I think when we look in 10 years and who's actually at scale and where most of the revenue is coming from, I still think they're (Tesla) ahead." - Andrej Karpathy

I strongly believe Tesla's approach to self-driving will ultimately outpace Waymo’s, despite current perceptions. Tesla's strategy of leveraging massive real-world data to refine its AI and software is far more scalable than Waymo’s reliance on expensive hardware like LiDAR. While Waymo may appear technically superior now, it’s a fragile lead—hardware challenges are far more costly and less adaptable in the long run. In ten years, it’s not just about who has the best self-driving tech but who can deploy it at scale and profit. Betting against Tesla's aggressive iteration cycle and software-first philosophy seems shortsighted. The real race will be won by the company that can turn self-driving into a mass-market product, and Tesla’s vision is poised to disrupt the entire industry, leaving Waymo struggling with an outdated, expensive model.
