There are some cool things being built on the new Warpcast-defined DMs. This flywheel of products can't take off if every client chooses a different way to deliver DMs. It only works if there is one "logical" Farcaster DM protocol that all clients use. (But, it could be implemented w/different new HUB types.)

Why FC-native DM? Identities on Farcaster can represent many different update-able connected addresses including Solana and and have a way to add per-device signers. XMTP can only message a specific wallet addresses. Also, someone had to pay to store/forward msgs, there is already framework for this with HUB storage.

My take: Crawl -> Walk -> Run The @warpcast team has a proven track record of decentralizing each layer on their roadmap. For example, there was a time when only Warpcast team could add accounts. Today, anyone can create one on Optimism. Yes DMs should be in the protocol and eventually open to all.

https://warpcast.com/sealcaster used to offer something like this, but doesn't look like it's working anymore.

None of them had @cassie on their team! 😀 Trying to get more people to check out her spec: https://tinyurl.com/yc27a4xe E2EE for a centralized service like 𝕏, FB, TG could be added pretty easily if they just used Signal proto, but I suspect they don't want to give up on all the data they are collecting.

Got it, so you want to onboard them for free (you'll cover the .03 of that transaction only) and give them a "read only" like experience without the hassle of having to pay the full experience right? I think it's a valid use case. Should be explored.

I’m actually looking forward to a future where this is possible. Could even do it with ZK so actual wealth is private. Until then, you gotta ask your (not OG) dad to co-sign.

With the captcha becoming more and more of a simple IQ test, what happens when ChatGPT has a higher IQ than most humans (or does it already) 😰

It might be better to put this in business terms. We have an idea for a Farcaster-native client where the user starts with an FID w/controlling Ethereum address so they can receive airdrops and NFTs by interacting with frames, then progress to earning storage. So either we limit to existing WC users or a min $3 CAC.

True, but it is $.03 vs. $3. $.03 if you want to exist. 😄 $3 if you want to tell the world about it. 😅

This is true today, but what if you're building an app that is truly FC-native and want to experiment with unlocking new ways to onboard new non-FC users. Image a client that is essentially readonly except the ability to interact with frames until some point in the user journey when paying for storage is justified.

I wish we could create FIDs without paying for storage. It would make it much cheaper to onboard new users in "readonly" experiences and take advantage of the FC Identity layer across other use-case.

“Farcaster must remove all the bots” This is a worrying line of thinking I’m seeing more often. The argument goes that it’s not enough to hide uninteresting content. It *must* be removed from the protocol. That is, someone must judge the worthiness of accounts and delete them from the protocol.

Bluesky is following Farcaster's playbook for DM support and "ultimately decided to launch a basic centralized system to take the time pressure off the team". They also plan to "fully support E2EE DMs as part of atproto itself, without a centralized service". Be awesome if Bluesky & Farcaster shared the same DM proto!

FC-native messaging is the right approach. This way your FC ID is the inbox for all messages regardless of the number of connected addresses. Also when moved into the FC protocol, paying for storage could also cover DC/GCs and Hubs remain the source of censorship resistant message delivery. 💪🚀
