genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs?

you must not know many folks from ireland or boston. 

besides having tons of hits they were always early adopters of cutting edge (no pun intended) concert technology, really leaning into what screens could do before most. this helped establish a lot of ties with tech companies + after Live Aid Bono leaned into the world ambassador messianic thing so they were uniquely set up as the kind of perfect act to package and sell with new products.
