Haha. Try: Twitter, Bluesky, Farcaster, and 3x Mastodon accounts (although that just proved to me that I can’t do alts). I have some automated stuff on Twitter and otherwise am mostly on Mastodon. Why? I’m watching and learning about different networks and how they evolve.

~10M accounts. Why? It’s been around for years, the ActivityPub protocol is a W3C standard, there are multiple server and client codebases, everything from self host to shared servers are federating, Medium, Mozilla, and Flipboard run servers for their users. /1

Who? Open source / FOSS people, those who wanted a Twitter alternative. People gathering together to run servers for their community. Co-op vibes. Feels like early days of blogging. More Twitter than Instagram. Skews older. /2

More who? There are some right-leaning instances like Gab & Counter Social that got defederated i.e. everyone blocks them. They used it because OSS codebases were ready to go today. /3

Why not? Server based accounts. You can move accounts between servers, but your username changes and not all data transfers. Various parts of federation are confusing to people who want Twitter clones. Most crypto things get blocked & defederated. /4
