As someone whose lost both parents and witnessed my spouse losing hers, I will say that western medicine needs to do a much better job of having tough conversations with families so loved one can make the best decisions so parents can pass with dignity not hooked up to 100 machines.

Yeah. I’m lucky. My parents were very good at talking about it and it was cathartic for all. That said, even when equipped with all my knowledge, my dad passed in the hospital. We had no window to get him out and back home and the doctors won’t have end of life convo until family initiates.

I can’t agree more with this. Western culture handles this poorly on every level. It’s not just medicine’s responsibility to have these conversations. Similar tough experiences have led to a lot more openness within my own family about plans for dying and I am grateful
