A new law, set to take effect immediately, makes it illegal to create and publish deepfakes related to elections 120 days before Election Day and 60 days thereafter. It also allows courts to stop distribution of the materials and impose civil penalties. https://frame.weponder.io/api/polls/14946

Frame is not working for me right now, but it is a nuanced answer anyway. The main problem is what people will label as a deepfake which might just be satire and satire is protected by the first amendment. Unfortunately we are in an era of one party admitting in an interview they make up stories to influence the public politically and their prime candidate holding records for the most lies and mistruths spoken in official public capacity. So we need some way to hold them accountable for truly successful deepfakes. On the other hand, we have a lot of people who are naive or very cognitively biased who will believe even obviously faked videos and images, and many others who will be fooled by actually impressive ones. So the production of it needs to be prohibited and punished because with such tight margins and a party set on taking the election in a coup if necessary, anything can tip the scales illegitimately. If we could trust all our politicians to play fair it wouldn’t be necessary but we can’t.
