if my family is going to NYC this summer and wants to do all the classic new york city tourist stuff - ellis island, empire state building, etc., where is the best location/place to stay? would prefer it be a hotel in a nice area

much cleaner than midtown (where most ppl stay) and a lot quieter and safer
