My son came home from school today (third grade, he’s 9) and was very down and sad When we talked to him we found out that they are having an end of the year party tomorrow, and you get to participate based on how well you performed on a test Everyone passed as far as getting to watch a movie and have popcorn (yellow level), but then there was a green level, where you get a drink, and a blue level, where you also get a candy My son only reached the yellow level (he has a disability + IEP and all) and was embarrassed and sad that he doesn’t get to participate with the rest of the class and get a drink and snack I’m a teacher myself so I’m always trying to err on their side, but part of this seems kind of messed up for that young of an age, esp when my son has a disability that directly impacts his performance on these things When we reached out to the teacher to see her side of the story - we didn’t want to just blindly trust our son on it - she reiterated the system What would you guys do?

Pack your son a 2 liter drink a jumbo sized candy of his choice (Father to a sassy 6 year old daughter and a 1 year old son who just grunts when he wants something)

I'm not a parent and I'm sorry that your son's feeling got hurt I think this kind of education system will not profit most This way children will think that if they get it right they will have something delicious at the end Teaching even with numbers and scores isn't good enough The main thing is that children could learn more, and they can with every kind of activity and not necessarily with prizes System has flaws imo

I have a cousin with the same disability, and your post really resonated with me. He works so hard, but people often overlook how much effort it takes for him to do things others find easy. There was a time when his class had a recognition ceremony, and only the kids with high scores were called up. He wasn’t included, even though he had made huge progress compared to where he started. He looked fine at the moment, but later on, he told me it made him feel invisible, like none of his effort mattered. That’s why your son’s experience feels so disheartening. I’m sure the school didn’t mean any harm, but reward systems like that can unintentionally leave out kids who are already giving so much. I think it’s worth bringing up in an IEP meeting just to make sure situations like this are handled with more understanding moving forward. Your son absolutely deserves to be included and celebrated. Sending a virtual hug to your son and to you too🫂

Well that’s a tough one my son has a few learning disabilities ADHD oppositional Defiance disorder never confirmed by a Dr but we’re pretty sure dyslexia too he’s getting ready for high school maybe this years been rough plus the video games that he literally never puts down when home but he has struggled and missed out on things because of it but I also see the other side where he’s the kids earned it and you can’t always accommodate kids that have learning disabilities and difficulties I myself struggled but the real world is a dog eat dog world and we know it the playing field will never be level and unfortunately people with learning disabilities and and/or behavioral disabilities won’t always be catered too but I hope the little guy will get a drink and snack

I think your son needs to accept this and face it. He might not be the best at some things, but he’s definitely better than others in different areas. He needs to build that belief in himself, figure out what he’s good at, and focus on those strengths.

You can always get him the drink and candy after, but I feel it’s a flawed system
