Just finished reading! Agree mostly BUT there is an implicit bias towards technological determinism here which could underestimate the need for strong social and cultural foundations to go alongside technological solutions. Could you expand on that @vitalik.eth ?

What do you mean by technological determinism, and what kind of social and cultural foundations do you want to see?

(1/2) tech determinism suggests that technology is the main driver shaping our world, but i think it’s more nuanced because as long as humans are involved, how we view and interact with tech is just as important. For example, something as simple as “directions” (left, right) varies across cultures, which changes how they interact with ‘navigation tech.’ As we move further into digital subcultures, these differences will only grow. You mentioned this with the Taiwan example — context is key (and the world is only increasing in the need for context as things get weirder lol) (…cont’d below)

As for what I’d like to see - Open forums focused on the “why.” Each person’s “why” is crucial because it shapes how we perceive and interact with technology. We just need more spaces to LISTEN. I’ve had amazing eye opening conversations with everyone from onchain artists to street vegetable sellers in Nepal about their why and it’s all different. - more A/B tests to explore what makes Ethereum more accessible to everyday people. We should be careful not to dictate cultural foundations, and we should empower others to build their own but we need to have a good grasp of “what gets someone interested in ethereum in the first place?” - generally we should take more time to understand the various cultures relationship with our tech and then enable them to set their own cultural foundations atop it, I think this complements the idea of a cooperative & pluralistic society you’ve done a lot here, would like to see others also allocate more spend on such investigations.
