Several centuries ago, in England and Scotland, punishment was applied to women — they put a mask on their face, from which an iron gag with spikes went into their mouth, making any movement of the tongue painful. In such a design, a woman was exposed in a public place. Among those punished, quarrelsome wives and those suspected of being witches were most often found — without being able to speak, they could not do magic.
