There’s an undercurrent of mental illness present in active internet communities.

Acceleration optimists might say this is just the future of the human psyche. That it’s not illness, it’s adaptation.

But what if it’s more like Area X and we’re in it so deep and it’s so complex that we can’t understand the extent of the disfigurement and destruction.

Yeah who knows? If I continue with the Area X comparison, maybe it's neither good nor bad when you're zoomed out enough, just dimensionally disruptive. New axes emerging.

But at the individual level, it may all seem fine until suddenly it's very much not fine.

I think there's a mentality of "at least we're not drinking lead water and smoking/drinking while pregnant and whatever else we've improved over the past century, how bad could it be?"

Could be pretty bad.
