Steam is the one that doesn’t quite fit in that it was a developer building a distro system for patching vs explicitly building a platform. The games for Valve came well before the platform. For Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sega the platform was the product from the get go.

Largely agree. While innovation in distribution is what drives enterprise value content is still what drives gamers.

It’s def the outlier yes and the intentions were different. Although one can still argue the utility of Steam would have no value with the game. So the general point is: people should avoid releasing game tools before games. 😅
