Venezuela woke up to darkness today. A power outage affected the entire country, with every state losing electricity this morning. In March 2019, Venezuela experienced a massive blackout that left lasting effects in some cities, even as late as 2024. The country endured three days without power. At that time, the government claimed it was sabotage, a narrative they are repeating in response to today's nationwide blackout. During those days, the country was already mired in an institutional crisis following an election that Maduro won, an election called without the legislature's involvement. However, the reality is that years of neglect, poor maintenance, and lack of investment crippled the power grid—compounded by repressive management, inadequate wages, and unsafe working conditions. And it's worth mentioning that a massive corruption scheme that funneled billions meant for the power grid didn't help matters either.
