How do you tell whether or not you're simply following a hype cycle (e.g. web3, AI) or whether you've developed a genuine conviction? I feel like it's so easy to fall into the trap of doing the consensus thing and convincing yourself that you're being contrarian (I'm guilty).

I think a good test is your intellectual integrity. Do you care about understanding a concept deeply from first principles or just enough to sound smart in front of others?

If you have a genuine conviction you will typically put in the effort to learn.

Getting feedback from others you trust and potential customers has been the best way for me to develop conviction.

I also need real subject matter expertise or an edge to truly feel convinced.
