Sometimes self funding organically - while it make sense on a theoretical level - requires a ton of patience and opportunity cost, plus the stomach for the downside risk of allowing a passing market (ie. Not capitalizing on the market dynamics fast enough) before a window fades.

I get the cognitive bias towards capital but if the market passes, was there ever a sustainable business to be built?

Well, there are evergreen markets and there are ephemeral ones. Some businesses are not sustainable, but about capturing enough market share before the opportunity passes. Depends on the time horizon and your goals around sustainability I guess.
