This is surprising. Makes me wonder (a) what part of my mental model needs updating, or (b) where the error is in the calculus.

Error in the calculus is probably partly due to these are countries at v diffeeent stages of development and that this is looking at aggregate price level, which is also including how screwed the economy was. If economy goes to pot, and govt pumps in 20% of GDP, then inflation overall could stay level In addition, most countries on 40%+ inflation had other economically damaging things going on alongside covid surely

This is a bad chart. A lot goes into inflation. Who knows what countries are on the far left of it. As for the g8 if the US inflates everyone inflated at least at our level since we set the prices. So maybe if we were closer to where France was the entire chart would be lower.
