John Doerr's green funds in early 00s eventually returned 2x after 20 years, so lousy IRR. The new venture bet in the space is that the capex needs are smaller, that the path to commercialization is shorter and that there's a bigger software play. I do see opportunities that fit this profile, but not as a general rule
