in january i launched a coin for vol, a running game i’ve been working on for a while. before the new year, i built a web mvp that i was ready to take to ios. i launched on solana with 0 prep, about 100 usd, a brief description and some screenshots from figma, leaving a note that i’ll use funds raised to pay for ios dev costs. it blew up within the first 30 minutes, eventually reaching over 3m mcap in a few hours. this was pre-content coins, so expectations were a telegram community, token roadmap, x spaces, and much more – all of which i knew nothing about going into it. (i’m more on the eth culture culture coins and media side of crypto) honestly, what followed was brutal. i launched the coin with the intention to learn in public, and unfortunately received a number of death threats, legal threats, and abuse in my comments and over messages for weeks after for not knowing the unspoken rules of the solana space.

nevertheless, i made liquid about 50k, reinvesting some in the token and the rest going to development costs. since then been sharing progress in public, onboarded the first 100 users to the beta, got feedback from some great builders, and held an irl event in london. now with public release in development, i’m so hyped to share it with you all soon. soo was it worth it? would i do it again, and would i recommend raising this way?

i’d say context changed a lot. base and zora normalised more casual token launches. nevertheless, i think at this type of velocity and mcap you’ll inevitably attract speculators who are only in it for the short-term gain rather out of interest in what you’re making. if you can pre-populate and select your token investors with a more thoughtful, dedicated and close circle, i’d absolutely recommend it. managing investor expectations is still difficult on a platform level, but we’re so much closer to a new way of pulling resources together without middlemen. be kind and keep building.
