is it common to discard all branch changes, go back to main, and just pretend you didn't spend 2hrs trying something? thank you for your support.

Sounds healthier that my approach... Spend another 3 days digging the hole deeper, then an afternoon trying to convince anyone in the team that will listen that we should merge it ("I'll add a todo to go back and rethink it later!") before eventually conceding that it's garbage and getting a beer.
