people that play drums or music well – if you're playing a beat say with the cymbal and bass, are these two separate tracks to you: bass and cymbal or one track where they're interleaved? put another way, can you seamlessly play the beat with one hand while the other stops or starts? i can't do two different things with one hand each. i feel like im capable of a single track and i play the notes or rhythm as one beat after the other. the same for piano.

It’s been a really long time since I played piano, but I think I know EXACTLY what you mean. I was always really frustrated that there was a gap between the treble and bass parts on sheet music. Because in my brain, it was one single continuous part. From left side of left hand, continuously to the right side of right hand. My brain just couldn’t think of it as two separate parts.

i've never learned to read sheet music, maybe that's part of my confusion and difficulty. but yeah, i noticed when i was a kid my brother could keep rhythm in one hand while he played something else with the other, like two distinct processes, for me it felt very intertwined, if one stopped the other got lost.

Developing this kind of "independence" takes a lot of practice, but ultimately does become second nature. I don't think I consciously think of each hand as a completely different part though. I'm now trying to master independence with respect to singing & playing at the same time and often struggling.

I think maybe we are referring to different things. I had quite a lot of practice πŸ™ƒ And could play the parts independently. But mentally, my brain thought of everything continuously, from left side of keyboard to right side. Like a number line. So for example, if I played only the right hand part, the left hand part was still β€œthere” to me mentally, but it was silent.
