nikita bier's "explode" app is textbook for growth hacking 1) made imessage app (increases viral coefficient by making the core feature "share with friends") 2) uses app clips (increases top-of-mind awareness on lock screen) 3) haptics (makes app feel good, good use of phone vibration) 4) onboarding flow ensures user adds "explode" to top of imessage apps, before using app (increases stickyness) 5) onboarding flow requires user to send text to friend, then says "send 2 more texts for 1 month free" (increases viral coefficient) 6) abstraction of $7.99/mo payment (increases conversions by decoupling pain of payment with pleasure of the app)

Buuuuut.. hear me out.... he has a cult following and stardom to launch something that instantly goes viral. He put in the work and earned that capability. Layer on the growth hacks and yes, it pops tf off If I released Explode instead of him, it would have like 3 users and 2 would be my cofounders 😭 Its a great app nonetheless and lots to learn

bad claim imo he didnt need his following to get users for Gas app or Tbh app and he didnt talk about Gas app or mention it once until it hit #1 on the app store, and that was recent https://x.com/nikitabier/status/1579928402487701504?s=46

I think both sides of this can be true. I think his natural virality lends itself to a bootstrap of his apps spread but at the same time the dark patterns it introduced for growth clearly worked and it seems there is an audience for the core feature of the app BUT the story I keep seeing is "look at these patterns on how to grow your app" not "explode is p cool".
