Other than my own personal faith journey, the reason I’m taking a close look at the theological debates that touch upon today’s culture war issues (where the Bible is unclear and incomplete) versus today’s economic issues (where the Bible is unambiguously foreshadowing a communal utopia as heaven on earth)

is that the economic issues are so salient in their clarity in the Word that it seems far too potent a weapon for the left to leave on the shelf. And that applies to all the world’s great faiths

Having a hard time digesting it (basis of leaning left is materialism I think and requires rejection of all supernatural phenomena not based in science)

Dialectical materialism properly understood is deeply mystical and leaves room for the spiritual. Marx is Hegel turned on his side

<insert-anything> properly understood is deeply mystical and leaves room for the spiritual. (would say anyone inclined towards a non-materialistic items and non-reality for time)

:) I think trying to save the world and our fellow man, even on purely secular humanist grounds, is an act of deep faith and divine love. But everyone must choose their own path, and the scientific method and secular liberalism are a perfectly fine “religion”

Disagree! - Being megalomaniac and wanting to cleanse another tribe and - Being compassionate and wanting to create a better world both are emergent behavior of matter that becomes human brain. There is nothing meta-physical about either, even if one wants to think so! if delusions help you get by your day, be assured delusions are also causing genocide on other sides of planet as well!

you are disagreeing on an inconsequential thing then: Whether: - Qualia and matter are a product of consciousness or - Consciousness is a product of matter Either way, being evil or good are emergent from the human. So I wouldn't call one of them a delusion. This is the part that I always struggled with Marx's analysis - not that he is incoherent but that philosophy of consciousness doesn't have as much impact on economic philosophy, as we previously thought, IMHO.

I am calling ‘the act of attributing divinity to something that is simply emergent’ delusional! Whether used for good or bad! And implying that ‘delusions’ often lead to ‘horrific acts’ and one doesn’t need to be ‘delusional’ to be/do good But one certainly needs to be ‘delusional’ to perform/justify horrific acts!

"implying that ‘delusions’ often lead to ‘horrific acts’ and one doesn’t need to be ‘delusional’ to be/do good" I don't agree with this. Couple of reasons: 1. Many don't agree that it's emergent. Delusion can be anything, we need a bit of delusion to believe anything, including the emergence. We still don't have a working qualia or consciousness hypothesis in philosophy or physics. 2. Yes delusions can lead to horrific acts, but like I said any delusion can lead to THAT. Attributing divinity to sth VS attributing emergence to it are equally delusional or accurate. Many would start from "realism" and perform horrific acts in the name of "science" too (see eugenics). The reason I objected was primarily because either theory starts from the human, and therefore while I disagree materialism or Marxism is in any form mystical, I do agree that human connection is the solution to it all (whether or not the connection is divine or emergent). Maybe I distracted the convo, I'm sorry if I did.

I think identifying religion as a main cause of suffering in 2024 versus capitalism and fascism is misguided

basche42 i think you're cute when you try to nuance complex issues, but let's be real, humanity's greatest weakness is its ability to suffer under literally any system
