It's more interesting how the window shifted... social security was not this kind of bi-partisan issue before, it was a more widely agreed upon good. Sad I guess.

Not saying a politically active and powerful left can't yield this result, but Eisenhower's administration had a brief overlap with the inquisition into communists, and I don't think the fear that drove that receded immediately with McCarthy's fall from power. Not to say all leftists are communists, but I don't think this was a result of a left able to hold the right accountable - likely more a reflection of how far to the right the Republican party has shifted since then.
