Right after denver but maybe I'll wing it. What would the move be down there for staying/attending/surfing to do it smart/right?

Dope! I would suggest staying in el tunco or el zonte on the beach, not the city. Quick Uber ride to/from the event and you have easy access to surf. Also some other cool things to do beyond surf like lago Coatepeque, hike volcano Izalco, coffee tours, etc.
