UN FAO ranks China as #1 in food.

1) The difference vs @gigamesh's chart could be due to ranking by value rather than raw tonnage. See investopedia link below.

2) As of 2022, the US was still a net food exporter and China is still a net importer. But China is pushing hard to become self-sufficient.

3) I attached table and screenshot below. May be a difference in definitions.

Oh TIL USA is behind India in terms of food production, when did India produced that much, passing USA?

The number of population doesn't play a positive role for China in this, and it is unfair to compare, of course China will import food until it become self-sufficient and it is a big move when she succeed to be self-sufficient. 
Food for 1.5 billion is not like food for 350 Million, look at India in the second place also.
