my 1 year old is starting his daycare this week. for parents who've been down this road, what's the best piece of advice for the transition? any lessons you learned the hard way?

16 years later, I'm going through it again with my boy off to college. There are no hard and fast rules that apply to all parents and all children. You are going to get it wrong more than you get it right. Find something to engage them right away at the day care. Pull in other children that have been there already to engage with them. Ask teacher to also take part in whatever toy that interests them. You and teacher together playing with them signals that the teacher is OK. Ours didn't go until 2.5 years, so I think you may have it a little more difficult than we did.
