Way back in the day, online meant using Bulletin Board Systems similar to this. You'd literally dial in via modem directly to the BBS to interact with others on a topic (if there was a line into it open) and if you wanted porn, you'd wait minutes at a time for an image(not a video) to download. 

What I remember is how good the mods/devs would get at optimizing the UI experience, because you were so limited. 

I can remember how excited we were for a GUI based platform to hit the scene called Excalibur. Unfortunately for them, their timing sucked ass, because they launched in 1993, just 2 years before we all started using web browsers.
