@notdevin.eth and his holy war on anti-depressants has never seen postpartum depression, ptsd, sad, etc what about pain medications for termally ill people? there are, for sure, drugs that shouldn't be needed, e.g. ozempic, blood pressure drugs, etc—this is managed by diet and exercise much better, yet requires systemic changes (i.e. making junk food less available) on the other hand, there's way more evidence that animal products cause harm than that seed oils cause harm (literally all the evidence says seed oils are safe)—yet people are afraid of seed oils while indulging on red meat daily the world is nuanced and there're no easy solutions

[1/2] It’s indeed a nuanced matter, and it’s rather unfortunate that the public debate about it usually ends up being “just go for a run, dude” vs. “depression is a medical condition that must be treated with drugs” simplistic war. I suspect it stems from some prejudices on one side and misunderstanding the purpose of psychiatric nosology on the other (which then gets exploited by pharmaceutical companies). What we call “depression” is essentially a set of symptoms given a name to speed up communication. Now, there is a multitude of factors that could be responsible for those symptoms, and it’s difficult to investigate all of them properly. Antidepressant can help in alleviating some of the symptoms, but they are often prescribed–to put it mildly–without due diligence.
