This is a complicated topic: should protocols also build clients? There is no right answer but my guess would be that the best way to gather the best community of builders is to only do the protocol, and maybe build a demo client.

Technically geth is the only client built and maintained by the eth foundation but still they are very proactive in suggesting client diversity

But this is different. Geth doesn't accrue value even if everyone uses it although wc does (or will in the long term) so not sure what the correct way is. Also remember, Merkle needs some way of generating revenue
