Formula 1 cars have been constantly improved to increase downforce, which has been achieved, in particular, by minimizing ground clearance. To combat extreme cases and improve safety, since 1994 all cars have been required to have a simple 10 mm thick composite strip made of beech wood on the bottom. After the race, the boards are checked, and if the wear exceeds the allotted limit, the driver's result can be cancelled.
