In the wild world of Can-Am racing, the Chaparral redefined conventional aerodynamics to give it an edge over the competition. The company's previous race cars had used massive aerodynamic wings to achieve this, so the engineers decided to have some fun with that next time. Chaparral came up with an ingenious way to get optimal downforce no matter what speed the car was going, the new 2J. It was "stuck" to the track using a vacuum. Two fans were mounted in the rear of the car, powered by a snowmobile engine, and sucked air from underneath the car. The side skirts were kept an inch off the ground at all times, thanks to a special suspension design. The 2J actually had some serious downforce. In this regard, it outdid many of its competitors, but still, the 2J was terribly unreliable and was subsequently banned and suspended from racing, this happened within one year. #car #speed
