Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, happy holidays, happy whatever and wherever you are today 💜 I’m in an introspective place this week and haven’t been casting as much. This morning I’ve been reading my grandfathers war memoirs, which he wrote in his 80s based on all the letters he sent home to his love, my grandmother. Coincidentally I happened to read about what he did on Christmas Day 1944, 80 years ago. “I stood an eight hour watch as JOOD (Junior Officer of the Deck) on the quarterdeck from 0800 to 1600 today. I took over from another officer’s watch so that he might spend Christmas Day with his wife” I’m only a third way through and it’s covered about a 15 month period so far since he got called from the draft to serve. So many mundane details of his time. It is a wonderful gift to have.

Oh my what a gift! To be able to peer into the past through your grandfather's writing is so precious. Thank you for sharing. I've done a significant amount of genealogical research on my family and biological family. I thoroughly enjoy coming across anything personally written during the time period. Even a person's memoirs makes it all come alive in a way that government records and newspaper clippings can.t

My most precious treasure is my grandfathers poem book that my grandma gave me before I left Venezuela 💗✨

Have you found much? Imagine what future generations will be able to learn from all this social media posting?! But I also wonder what are we losing without long form letters?
