This is the detail of the right eye of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq (1605–1655), mayor of Amsterdam in the mid-17th century, as masterfully captured by Rembrandt in his famous 1642 painting The Night Watch on display at the Rijksmuseum. The painting was recently photographed in 8,439 close-up shots with a 100-megapixel Hasselblad camera using laser alignment to build the largest digital representation of a work of art ever, at 717 gigapixels. Each pixel is one micrometer (10^−6 m) in resolution, smaller than a human red blood cell, which means there's plenty of room to zoom far further into the pupil or any other aspect of the of the painting if you're so inclined. Technology in the service of the humanities creates wonders The full-resolution photo is available at https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/stories/operation-night-watch/story/ultra-high-resolution-photo
