Academic inflation vs artificial intelligence, or AI vs AI: a thread. ๐Ÿงต Over my 25-year career, I have witnessed and observed the phenomenon of academic inflation, which I define as the value of a degree only ever decreasing from the moment it is conferred. There are three main mechanisms how this happens. 1/8

First, the democratization of higher education. Prima facie, this is a desirable trend, as it gives more people an opportunity to earn a higher income. However, it also leads to tertiary (post high school) degrees being less scarce, and therefore less valuable for everyone. Case in point: enrolment has more than doubled at academic institutions worldwide between 2000 and 2014 (faster than population), and in the UK alone, universities have increased the overall number of diplomas by five times since 1990 (Morgan, 2021). Anecdotally, when I hire at my firm, I receive tons of CVs that have become difficult to tell apart, because everybody seems to have a Masters degree โ€” and that was not the case when I joined the workforce. 2/8

Thanks for sharing this. One thing I was waiting for & hope youโ€™ll comment on is the role of individuals creativity as the differentiator The opportunity cost you mention is something I see & is on the mind of one of my spawn. They prob could have worked at fb after HS graduation (dev skills) & now is seeing the university curriculum & scratching head a bit about the value of a degree in general

At the end I still donโ€™t think a degree is worth it anymore, I remember the joy when I started with civil engineering but now that Iโ€™m on field thereโ€™s no new adaptation or innovation except simplifying designs with computer itโ€™s just stagnant. The world is pivoting more to web3 and AI, just think people should learn to work around these two things to stay relevant. But if you choose to do a degree make sure itโ€™s for passion and not for the money cause thereโ€™s no money.
