It just dawned on me that there is a whole purgatory section at the back of the fridge where borderline expired, suspiciously old, or plain unappealing food goes to die long before someone in the household finally decides to throw it away. This is like unspoken sociologically emergent group behavior

I try to make an effort to look specifically in that spot every week so it doesnโ€™t get too out of control. Harder now because food is so expensive and i typically find myself eating and running out of food, but it still happens. It hit me when I noticed a random bowl, opened the bowl and saw a moldy yogurt parfait that I made for my mom close to a month ago that I had to wash 3 times before o could use it again.

I feel like the diversity of cuisines in the modern diet plays a role here. If youโ€™re having bibimbap one night, risotto the next, butter chicken the night after that, you need dozens of condiments, spice mixes, even types of rice, to make stuff to a decent standard. That shit accumulates and takes up a lot of space. Easy to lose a half eaten jar of kimchi down the back.
