And yet an advocate is someone who defends you, including in a legal sense in some English-speaking countries (like India, where an advocate has a bachelor of law vs a lawyer who passed the bar) Beyond that, “faux amis” (false friends) in French are fun! There are plenty of them due to the historical proximity with English (which borrows ~70% of its words from French) and semantic divergence over time actuellement ≠ actually blesser ≠ to bless un car ≠ a car déception ≠ deception éventuellement ≠ eventually fortuné ≠ fortunate etc.

Though technically an advocate would translate to “un défenseur”, which is also the word used for a player in a defending position in a game of football/soccer. At least here the two meanings are not as far apart as between a lawyer and a fruit lol @vitalik.eth would probably enjoy this thread
