One of the major questions of our time: why do so many people choose to do jobs that they clearly don't enjoy? I'm not talking abt circumstances where they don't have a choice. I mean otherwise affluent people w no meaningful risk of losing food or shelter who show up everyday to do something they hate. What's up?

Speaking from experience: 1/ It brings the cheese. Less of an issue before I had a kid, but I now have a greater obligation to keep the gig going. 2/ Lifestyle creep. Not to pay for lavish stuff, but simply a large enough place to live, school fees, quality food, etc which are all expensive in my high-CoL city. 3/ Visa. I need a job to stay in this country, and I might not get a visa for a more fun but also less qualified position. That would force a relocation to a place where I don’t want to be. 4/ Healthcare for myself and my dependents. Where I live, that’s tied to having a job, and not all jobs offer equal healthcare plans (better jobs = better healthcare). 4/ Exit opportunities. A time preference trade off to suck it up now in return for access to better career options later. 5/ Some element of prestige, NGL. Ties strongly to point #4 (the prestige wears off quickly, but the pedigree remains) in that the title does open doors and command some recognition in the industry.
