Sell a man fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you’ll get fishing quotas and overfishing, you’ll get bottom trawlers that destroy the environment, you’ll get gigantic ocean plastic continents that are the size of countries, you get general habitat degradation, fish that aren’t fresh and frozen for weeks. Up to almost 40% of all the fish we catch is fish we don’t intend to catch, it’s called bycatch and we’re doing it. Not to even mention all the unreported and illegal fishing we have absolutely no idea. Extinction events, we are the extinction event. Don’t even get me started on farmed fishing, it is a nightmare. Think industrial chicken farming but with fish. We truly are not going to be eating real fish in 100 years I bet. Probably for the best I know; but the consequences will be total and utter destruction of our ocean habitat and ecosystem

I think I’ve told you this story IRL, but witnessing first hand the damages caused by overfishing and trawlers during my scuba diving journey is what made me become a vegetarian. I stopped eating fish first, and then realized that the same logic applied to meat, so I cut that out of my diet too. Never looked back

Yeah while I was writing this I was reminded of our conversation for sure and I honestly couldn’t agree more. I was thinking about this while I was surfing today, I think if you care about the ocean you end up caring about what happens in the ocean, this is generally pretty natural progression

As a practicing omnivore it’s hard for me to really understand the experiences of a vegetarian, but these are my thoughts as someone who probably eats a lot less meat than most (Americans anyway). Completely eliminating meat/fish from the menu just limits the breadth of what we can experience. This is not to say that vegan/vegetarian meals aren’t as exciting as meat based meals, but there are meals that would not be the same without meat/fish. There’s joy and culture and humanity in preparing and eating all foods. Related to the health of our planet, id be surprised if the industrial farming of vegetables, grains, fruit, etc isn’t as harmful as meat/fish, maybe in different ways? My opinion is that nothing should be off the table but the quantities should be greatly reduced. When we eat these foods it should be a celebrated experience that we savor rather than a greasy sloppy mess covered in plastic cheese. Food should be respected and the prices should reflect it.
