Is TikTok pushing Taiwan’s young people closer to China? Yes. The portion of young Taiwanese who feel ‘Taiwanese’ versus ‘Chinese’ is collapsing @kenny Free speech isn’t free speech when the platform is twisting the algorithm https://on.ft.com/4gUcjZW

I recently wrote a cast (which I cannot find anymore for some reason) hypothesizing that China’s takeover of Taiwan will happen not with a bang, but with a whimper, using a grey combination FUD, propaganda, naval embargo, cutting of communications / undersea cables, etc instead of the frontal amphibious assault that everybody seems to expect

Seems reasonable. Is slowly happening over time. But the risk is that this relies on a few decades of consistent philosophies: if Xi’s great power expectations are correct, then you don’t need to worry about this bc China will only get stronger But if that is wishful thinking and the blights of dictatorship actually manifest for the long term, then it’s risky Cutting cables in Taiwan would be a major escalation
