It could have that effect. If it does, it may prove Adrienne Lafrance’s point. We are a society slowly acquiescing to authoritarianism on many fronts. I’m hoping that stiff realization provokes the necessary counterbalance - a reinvigorated commitment to enlightenment principles and the public good.
