I would argue that people with terrible views/opinions/politics are solely responsible for their own views. People assigning their own responsibility to others both infantilizes and enables them.

One thing Gray must be better at than Red / Blue: We don’t have to accept dichotomous premises. For example, it was horrible to watch “Supporting Ukraine is good” on left become “Supporting Ukraine is bad” on right… Just because root thinking was zero sum, dichotomous frame. Gray should seek Z-axis.

It worries me, too. Negative polarization led to the MAGA crowd embracing Hillary Clinton’s label of “Deplorables” as a point of pride, and, well, they sure ran with it. It could have that effect. If it does, it may prove Adrienne Lafrance’s point. We are a society slowly acquiescing to authoritarianism on many fronts. I’m hoping that stiff realization provokes the necessary counterbalance - a reinvigorated commitment to enlightenment principles and the public good.
